Amy blinked between the paper and Gavin a few times before shaking her head a bit and sighing. "Stupid place is so crappy that they're making the boys and girls room together. Don't they know that's how babies are made?" she laughed, joking. She wouldn't mind rooming with Gavin, as long as he kept his hands off of her delicate laundry. It would be far better than rooming alone. Just as long as he didn't snore...
She thought on that for a moment. "You don't snore, do you?"
Amy chuckled, trying to lighten things up. It was pretty hard for anything to be "light" in an orphanage. She noticed that most of the kids had cleared out: the biggest bunch had been the group watching the ping pong game, but now that no one would challenge the reigning champion, they'd all gotten bored and went to have fun some where else. There were still a couple of girls playing with the dolls that all of the girls in the house had to share, and Amy noticed that they would steal glances over at Gavin every now and again. She giggled, wondering what they must be thinking. She remembered being a little girl and being amazed by older boys.

Gavin couldn't help but laugh a bit at her joke about rooming boys and girls together. "Guess they don't care..." he said softly, "I mean...we're already in the orphanage." he said looking away for a moment. 'Orphanage'. what an awful word, Gavin hated to say it, but sometimes he had too. He looked at her when she asked if he snored, an odd question but it was okay with him. "Not that I know off." he said with a grin, he knew he didn't but it really didn't matter anyway. "Do you?" he asked with a smile.
He watched the girls playing house, moving the dolls and making little noises. All the imagination stuff he had never really been allowed to have. He saw them glance over at him a few times and he smiled a bit, watching their awed expressions as he did. He thought about his younger days, they had been so harsh, he had had nothing, he wasn't really allowed to do much. As a younger child, he had missed out on a lot of things, some of those things could never be made up. He realized this for a moment, and his heart hurt a bit.

Amy blushed a tad as she answered, "A little, if I have a cold. Otherwise, no." She had been waken up on so many sick nights to her younger brother Connor poking her sides and saying, "Sissy, you snorin'." It was hard not to when you couldn't force oxygen through your nose, so she wouldn't hold it against Gavin if he snored when he was sick too.
"But, I suppose that rooming a boy with a girl could be their way of keeping jobs. Two orphans could only give birth to pure-bred orphans after all. We could end up filling the place up." Her lips curved up into a smile. The thought of Amy ever having children was hilarious, but that would make the joke much less funny. It was human nature for people to find jokes about sex and birth funny, but once you brought botched biology into the picture, the humor left. Girls were programmed to play with dolls, to dream of having children. Amy had raised five already without a chance in the world of having her own. Were her brothers and sisters God's cruel way of making up for it?
Leaning over a bit, Amy offered a whisper in Gavin's ear. "I bet those girls would get close to wetting themselves if you winked over at them."

Gavin couldn't help but laugh at her comment about orphans having orphans, if you thought about it too long it was kind of depressing but he ignored the fact. It didn't matter much anyway, but it was kind a of a good point. Gavin thought about her comment for a moment, he was startled by her whispering in his ear. Winking at the little girls in front of him, he smiled at the thought, the thought hadn't even crossed his mind. They would be pretty happy with themselves if he did, he smiled a moment, thinking to himself. When he saw the girls glance at him again, he smiled for a moment, when it faded, he winked at them as a group, no one was left out of it.
He turned to Amy for a moment, "Let's hope they don't fight." he said softly, he laughed a bit. He watched the girls for a moment, wondering what they were going to do. He could see a few beginning to smile big, he just hoped none of them got their feelings hurt. He thought about them for a moment, they got along so well over there, they have friends, something he hadn't had much when he was their age.

"Well," Amy began, keeping close watch on the girls to see who would be the first to squeal in delight. "I don't think any of them are quite ready to fight with the big girls."
With a small laugh, Amy leaned over and placed a kiss on Gavin's cheek as soon as she saw one of the girls looking right at him. She meant nothing by it, but she did want to stir things up with the flirtatious little group. Ah, the cruelty of budding jealousy in young hearts! The worst thing that could happen would be that one of them appeared in her... their room and sliced her throat. She doubted any of them would be quite that crazy, but one could ever know with the orphans. She would have to remember to lock the door before she went to sleep.
Looking up at Gavin, she gave him his own wink, as if to say, Just Kidding! She didn't want him to take her too seriously. That was why she'd done it in the first place; Amy was just a big ball of spontaneity, bring up smiles with her random actions and reckless abandon. It kept kids amused, and it would let the orphaned girls have some fun. Gavin may be a different matter, but that had never really occurred to Amy. In the orphanage, it was all here-and-now because tomorrow never had the same cast of players. She had to have fun while she could, because for all she knew, Gavin could be gone tomorrow, leaving her without a friend in the world... again.

Gavin couldn't help but smile at the little girls' expressions they were priceless. Each one of them expressed it in their own way. He was a bit stunned when Amy kissed his cheek, he saw her look at the girls and then wink at him. He decided to play along a bit, putting his arm lightly around her shoulders, he smiled at the little girls in front of him. He knew it could be a bit cruel to do that to them but at this point he didn't really care. He was just having some fun, something he hadn't had in a long while.
He watched them for a moment, he watched one little girl turn away, occupying herself with the dolls once again. The others were trained on him, watching his every move. Most likely jealous that Amy was near him, under his arm, they probably wanted to be in her place. He couldn't understand why though, he was just some orphan kid, abused by his father, split from his brother, now living in this place, roomed with a girl. He wouldn't really wish this situation on anyone, hell, he didn't even want it.

Amy couldn't stop herself from letting out a small, "love-struck" giggle as Gavin played along. There weren't any toys for the older kids, so they just had to make due with the younger ones as playthings. She rolled her eyes a bit. "Gosh, I remember being just like them: back when all of the little girls just couldn't wait to be women and get the attention of anything male. That was the cool thing to do. If he was cute and would even give you a passing glance, you were like a preteen sex goddess... It's so nice to be grown up."
Of course, it wasn't much different when you were grown up. No matter what, that was the goal. As long as you were born female, you were born to catch a man and you would die with the same goal in mind. Some got lucky; some actually made some decent catches in their life times. But, for her now, she didn't delude herself. She wasn't the sex goddess she had thought she'd become ten years ago. She was just some short girl with huge eyes and no chance in the world of using her chest to get herself a husband. No, she was one of the less fortunate ones. Amy was going to have to rely on her wit and humor to seize a man. She had quite a lot of work ahead of her.

Gavin smiled at her comment about young girls trying to catch guys. He looked at her for a moment and grinned a bit, "You don't think guys felt the same way?" he asked with a laugh. "It's not so easy getting a girl to notice you either." he said with a small smile. He watched the small girls now playing once again, only one girl remained watching him. Not like a 'I like you' look but more of a 'hug me' little kid look. He couldn't help but smile at her, she closed her eyes for a moment, bashful in his gaze. When she looked back at him, he summoned her over. She quickly glanced at her friends and picked herself up. She wasn't over the age of 6, she was still in the cute little girl stage.
She walked over timidly and crawled into his lap, he looked at her for a moment. He glanced over at Amy for a moment and laughed a bit. "Guess I have a way with the ladies." he said with a grin, he hadn't expected this today, but he was glad that he had it.

Amy smiled a the girl, but she was far too enamored with Gavin to even noticed Amy. "Good luck finding a lady in this place," she muttered, just loud enough for Gavin to hear her. It was widely believed that the moment a girl got thrown into an orphanage, she either become quiet and mousy, or she turned into a whore. Of course, Amy knew that it couldn't be completely accurate. She was neither; she didn't know enough boys to be a whore, and she was far too outspoken to turn into a turtle. So, really, Gavin may have already found the one lady in this place. Of course, she would never toot her own horn like that by telling him just how prim and proper she was, because she definitely was neither prim nor proper. But she was better than some and that was pretty impressive.
But maybe this little girl, so young and untouched by the horrors of this cursed place, could be different than every one else. Maybe she could turn out to be the happy one. Maybe she could be Amy in a couple of years, but better. She could turn out to be that optimist. She could give some hope to all of the others.
Of course, she was pretty cute. Amy gave her a couple of months, and then she would end up in a better place. Some family would snatch her up; they'd be stupid not to.
"But, hey, who knows? Maybe you are just a natural-born chick magnet?" She smiled brightly at him. It was really an honorable skill to have. There was no way that many other guys in an orphanage could say they had such a title.

Gavin smiled at her comments especially the one about being a total chick magnet. That much he seriously doubted, no girl had really ever looked his way except for when they first found out that he was abused, they had oohed and awed over him as the victimized little boy, not for the guy he actually was. He hated that completely. He held the girl in his lap and smiled at her for a moment, he could see a few of the girls watching him once again. "What's your name?" he asked looking down at her for a moment. 'Hanna', she said with a childish grin. "I'm Gavin" he said with a smile, "and this is Amy." he said nodding over to her.
He watched the other kids around the room for a moment, a few with eyes trained on him, a few were mad or some kind of emotion and others were just blank expressions. He looked away from them and looked at Hanna then Amy. "Chick magnet my ass." he said in her ear, making sure not to corrupt sweet little Hanna's vocabulary. He smiled at Amy for a moment, his mind running with different thoughts.

Amy laughed a bit, not expecting Gavin to use such fierce language. "Well, you did manage to attract one chick," she answered, pointing innocently at herself. "Besides, I don't think any of the others have ever really seen a rooster before... Ah, why am I comparing us to poultry?" Another laugh rolled gracefully from her lips. This was a rare mood for Amy; she couldn't remember a time when she had ever laughed so much.
"Well now, Hanna," Amy said, turning her attention to the girl and smiling. "Why don't you go back and tell your friends how amazing Gavin is? I bet they would just think you were the best!" If Amy knew girls, the others wouldn't think she was the best at all. They would be jealous out of their minds. They would worship and hate her at the same time, longing for Gavin's love and keeping Hanna close to see what he had seen in her. It was a horrible female trait, but it was just the way things were. No one ever seemed to question it, and few were immune. She's only ever met a few girls in her life that had escaped the grasp of feminine jealousy, but they were all lesbians, so it was hard to tell if they still counted.
